The Maharashtra Sugar Cane Cutting and Transport Workers Union (SITU) has launched a “stop sugar cane cutting” protest due to unmet demands for increased commission rates for sugarcane cutters and higher transportation charges. Despite multiple meetings with sugar mills in recent months, no firm decisions were made, prompting the halt in work. SITU’s State General Secretary, Subhash Jadhav, expressed disappointment over the reluctance of sugar factories to agree to the proposed cost increases. He highlighted that neither the state sugar federation nor the government had scheduled a meeting to address the issue, holding them accountable for the situation. Jadhav called for support from all sugarcane transport workers and contractors to resolve the matter quickly, urging cooperation from sugar mills and district representatives.
